Kaun Banega Crorepati: The Show that brought Quizzing to the Common Man

Kaun Banega Crorepati not only resurrected Amitabh Bacchan’s career, it went to become one of the most popular shows on Indian television.India has always been a nation that has loved quizzing. All of us are familiar with Siddhartha Basu, also known as the father of Indian Television quizzing. In 1985 he hosted Quiz Time on Doordarshan, which went on to become a big hit.

Derek O’Brien and his father Neil O’ Brien have also made significant contributions to make quizzing popular in India.

However, Kaun Banega Crorepati also known as KBC in short became a big hit and a household name after it was launched in 2000. The show was inspired by a similar show on British Television known as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

It was hosted by none other than Amitabh Bacchan and his presence and baritone won over the viewers. Kaun Banega Crorepati initially offered contestants the chance to win Rs 1 crore, which was a big amount of money at that time. In August 2005, Kaun Banega Crorepati started again after a 4 year gap. This time the top prize amount was doubled to Rs 2 crore.

After Shah Rukh Khan hosted session 3, Amitabh Bacchan came back to host session 4 to session 10 of Kaun Banega Crorepati. By session 8 in 2014, the prize money was as high as Rs 7 crore.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Kaun Banega Crorepati was simple. After shortlisting a few winners they would be joining the host in the hot seat. They had to answer a series of multiple choice questions on their way to win the highest prize money. Features like’Ask the Audience’ and ‘Phone a friend’ made Kaun Banega Crorepati more exciting for the audience. The participants and the top prize winners became household names and the entire nation shared the emotions that were associated with them winning or losing.
